The University's Health Center's 1994 strategic plan called for the development of a strong health policy research unit. The Health Policy and Primary Care Research Center (HPPCRC) was officially approved as a Type II Center under the Direction of Howard Bailit, PhD in October 1996.
The original goals of the HPPCRC were to:
- become a nationally recognized Center for scholarly work on health policy with a special emphasis on primary care;
- provide the University of Connecticut Health System with applied research to improve patient care processes and outcomes,
- provide state and municipal government, health professional organizations and other nonprofit groups with health policy studies and information; and
- develop interdisciplinary educational experiences for health professional and other students in health services and policy research.
Judith Fifield, PhD was named Center Director in November 2005.
